Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service San Francisco CA
850 PM PDT Sun May 25 2025
...New UPDATE, MARINE...
.SYNOPSIS...
Issued at 113 PM PDT Sun May 25 2025
Near normal temperatures to start the work week. Warming trend to
begin on Tuesday with above normal temperatures anticipated by
Friday and the upcoming weekend.
&&
.UPDATE...
Issued at 839 PM PDT Sun May 25 2025
High clouds blanket the Bay Area while patches of stratus are
developing on the Big Sur coast and near Fremont Peak east of
Salinas. The forecast heading into Memorial Day remains on track
with no changes at this time. The main weather concern continues
to be the warming trend through the week, expected to peak on
Friday with Moderate HeatRisk possible in the interior. As a
reminder, Moderate HeatRisk means that there is a moderate risk
for heat related illnesses for vulnerable populations, such as
children, the elderly, people with chronic illnesses, and people
working outdoors. Remember to stay hydrated, take breaks in the
shade, and never leave anyone in an unattended vehicle!

.SHORT TERM...
(This evening through Monday)
Issued at 113 PM PDT Sun May 25 2025
A weak upper level trough is forecast to move across the region
tonight into Monday. This will reinforce the northwest flow across
the region and help deepen the marine layer to around 2,500 feet
in depth. Thus, expect low clouds to return tonight and into early
Monday morning across a majority of the region with the exception
of the higher peaks. There is also the potential for coastal
drizzle early Monday morning, especially across the San Francisco
Peninsula/San Mateo coastline.
In wake of the exiting trough, temperatures for Monday afternoon
are expected to be in the upper 50s to lower 60s on the
west/northwest facing coastline (lower 70s in places such as Santa
Cruz). Just inland from the coast, temperatures look to warm into
the mid 60s to mid 70s with the warmest interior spots reaching
into the upper 70s to near 80 degrees F. Breezy west/northwest
winds are expected again on Monday with gusts up to 45 mph in the
favored gaps, passes, and higher terrain.
&&
.LONG TERM...
(Monday night through next Saturday)
Issued at 113 PM PDT Sun May 25 2025
There is high confidence for a highly amplified ridge to build
over the northern two-thirds of the West Coast late this week and
into the upcoming weekend. Meanwhile, a cut-off low is forecast to
move toward southern California and Baja California during the
same timeframe. The track of this cut-off low will have little
impact on weather conditions across our region. Thus, expecting
Moderate HeatRisk by Friday across the interior as temperatures
warm to 10-15 degrees above normal. Near the coast, temperature
are a bit more tricky as they may need to be warmed up a bit for
late week. Currently, a shallow marine layer is forecast to be in
place which should keep temperatures relatively cooler. Be sure to
check back for the latest forecast updates.

.AVIATION...
(00Z TAFS)
Issued at 500 PM PDT Sun May 25 2025
MVFR to IFR CIGs are expected at most sites overnight with low to
moderate confidence on timing of stratus arrival. The marine layer
is expected to compress to around 1000 ft tonight which will keep
CIGs on the border of MVFR-IFR for most sites. Coastal sites (HAF,
MRY, SNS) have some potential for LIFR CIGs to develop overnight but
confidence is low. Patchy MVFR CIGs look to reach STS and APC
overnight with highest confidence in CIGs developing after 12Z but a
few ensembles show an earlier arrival around 09Z. Opted to push
stratus arrival back for most sites given recent trends towards a
late stratus return this evening. However, ensemble guidance does
show some patchy MVFR cloud cover developing prior to the main
stratus return. This initial stratus return is expected to be
temporary with low to moderate confidence in patchy MVFR CIGs
between 08-12Z. CIGs look to clear mid to late tomorrow morning with
diurnally breezy to gusty winds expected again tomorrow.
Vicinity of SFO...Gusty onshore winds continue through this evening
before MVFR CIGs return overnight. There is a 30-40% chance of MVFR
CIGs arriving as early as 05Z but confidence is higher in stratus
arriving between 08-10Z. Gusty onshore winds return again during the
day tomorrow with moderate onshore winds expected overnight.
SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to SFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals...Gusty onshore flow continues this evening
and again tomorrow afternoon/evening. MVFR CIGs will develop late
this evening and persist through mid to late tomorrow morning.
Pushed stratus arrival time back closer to 06Z for MRY and SNS with
probabilistic LAMP guidance showing a higher chance for stratus
arriving between 06-08Z. Confidence is low to moderate on timing of
stratus arrival so will monitor and update as needed.&&
.MARINE...
(Tonight through next Saturday)
Issued at 500 PM PDT Sun May 25 2025
Winds continue to diminish across the outer coastal waters but
will remain locally breezy through the rest of today along the
immediate coastline thanks to the development of a coastal jet.
Fresh to strong northwest winds return Monday and persist through
midweek with Small Craft Advisories in effect for gusty winds and
elevated seas. Conditions improve midweek before another round of
breezy to gusty winds begins late week and persists into the
weekend.
&&
.MARINE...
(Tonight through next Saturday)
Issued at 839 PM PDT Sun May 25 2025
Winds have diminished across the coastal waters everywhere except
the Big Sur Coastline where a Small Craft Advisory remains in
effect due to continuing fresh to strong gusts from the formation
of a localized coastal jet. Widespread fresh to strong northwest
winds return by midday Monday and continue through midweek with
Small Craft Advisories in effect for gusty winds and elevated
seas. Conditions improve midweek before another round of Small
Craft Advisories due to breezy to gusty winds begins late week.
